(YCDA release, 12/31/23) – The Yuba County District Attorney’s Office appeared at a parole hearing yesterday to argue against the release of murderer Johnny Nanlap, who stabbed his father Lai Nanlap to death at his home in Yuba County in August of 2014. Nanlap pled to committing murder and received a 15-year-to-life sentence as provided by law. Due to Proposition 57 which was passed by California voters in November 2016, the CDCR allows “Good Conduct Credits” for sustained good behavior exhibited by the incarcerated. With his credits earned, Nanlap received his first parole hearing yesterday, five years short of his minimum sentence.
The Yuba County District Attorney’s Office opposed Nanlap’s release, arguing that he does not appear to understand or articulate what led him to kill his father, which could lead to his committing other violent acts in the future. Fortunately, Commissioners Julie Garland and Mary Dang of CDCR agreed and denied the hearing.
A huge thank you to Deputy DA Caitlin Smith for the amount of hard work she did to prepare for this hearing. Caitlin takes great pride in representing the community and our victims and ensuring the commissioners have all of the facts before them when making these important decisions.
