(Yuba-Sutter, CA) – The Yuba County D.A.’s office reports that 65-year-old Howard John Barton has been arrested following a deputy involved shooting.

The incident began when the deputy responded to a medical aid call in the 5400 block of Feather River Boulevard in Olivehurst. The YCSO deputy fired when Barton allegedly “charged at a deputy sheriff while armed with a meat cleaver and a hammer…It is clear after reviewing the video from the deputy’s body-worn camera that the deputy acted in self-defense,” said Yuba County District Attorney Clint Curry, adding, “I anticipate filing charges against Barton this week for assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer.”

Barton was jailed after being released from the hospital for treatment of his injuries and according to the release, he β€œis being held in the Sutter County Jail pending his arraignment on Tuesday or Wednesday in Yuba County Superior Court.”
