(Yuba-Sutter, CA) – West Nile virus detections continue to increase throughout Yuba, Sutter, Colusa & Butte Counties. August is considered a peak month for the virus to spread.

Colusa’s Mosquito Abatement Manager tells The Appeal-Democrat our historically positive water years and subsequent increase in rice planting in particular, has led to a marked increase in mosquito activity.

The Sutter-Yuba Mosquito & Vector Control District Manager concurs, saying “we regard our current condition as an elevated risk for transmission of West Nile virus to humans.”

Last week, Butte County reported their first human West Nile virus infection of the year.
