(Sacramento, CA) — A proposed California policy that would have required schools to inform parents if their child wants to change their gender identity did not get enough signatures to be on the November election ballot. Proponents of the measure said it would provide important transparency for parents. However, those against the measure argued that it could endanger the safety of children living with families who do not accept changes in gender identity.
Some California school districts have faced legal challenges over similar parental notification policies in recent months. Proponents had to submit over half a million signatures of registered voters by Tuesday for the measure to qualify.
