(Sacramento, CA) — Opponents of California’s Prop-36, which passed this week, worry that the get-tough-on-crime approach will lead to mass incarceration. The California State Sheriffs’ Association says that most people committing petty crimes are doing it to feed their addictions. The only time that many get help is after they’re arrested.

Prop-36 creates a new category of crime called “treatment-mandated felony.” It allows a person to have their drug conviction set aside if they complete rehab.
