(Yuba-Sutter, CA) — A 59-year-old Loomis man was killed Saturday morning after a car crashed into him while riding his bike in Sutter County, officials with the California Highway Patrol say. T
he crash happened around 7 a.m. Saturday on Bear River Drive west of Swetzer Road. The bicyclist was riding in the eastbound lane of Bear River Drive when the car hit him. The driver of the car, described as a 2007 Yukon, allegedly drove away from the scene of the crash, which happened around 7AM Saturday.
The suspect vehicle, a 2007 GMC Yukon, was later located in a garage with help from the Placer County Sheriff’s Office and 35-year-old Harpreet Singh Atwal, of Plumas Lake, was arrested.
A nearby worker found the bicyclist laying in the road soon after the crash. The worker called 911 and medics took the victim to a hospital where he later died.
Atwal was booked into the Sutter County Jail and is facing charges of hit-and-run resulting in death and vehicular manslaughter. His bail has been set at $500,000.
