(San Francisco, CA) — Pacific Gas and Electric company is being fined 45-milion dollars for California’s second-largest wildfire. The 2021 Dixie Fire blackened nearly a million acres and destroyed over one-thousand buildings. The fire raged out of control after a tree fell on a PG&E power line.

The California Public Utilities Commission is demanding that 40-million dollars of the fine be used to digitize maintenance records. The rest will go to tribal governments affected by the fires and the state’s general fund.

The commissioners were split three-two on the decision. The CPUC’s safety watchdog division will monitor PG&E for compliance with the administrative consent order.
