(Undated) — Parts of California could see the northern lights tonight and tomorrow night, due to a “severe” geomagnetic storm. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says the aurora borealis might be visible as far south as Northern California and Alabama.

The storm was triggered by a fast coronal mass ejection from the sun Tuesday, leading NOAA to issue a rare G4-level watch for a major magnetic disturbance. The event coincides with a strong solar radiation storm expected to persist through Friday.
