(Sacramento, CA) — Governor Gavin Newsom has announced a new ballot measure enacting tougher penalties on some crimes will go before California voters in November. The governor and Democratic legislators are pushing the initiative as an alternative to a much tougher initiative backed by county district attorneys. The measure would crack down on repeat shoplifting offenses by making the third in three years punishable by a three-year prison sentence.
Another provision allows for harsher penalties for fentanyl dealers and makes it easier for them to be charged with murder.
Mental health and drug treatment programs would also see a boost in resources as part of the measure.
