(Sacramento, CA) — Starting next year, if you get pulled over by police in California, the first thing you hear won’t be the question, “do you know why I pulled you over?” A new California law will require officers tell drivers why they’re being pulled over. And that’s before questioning.
There’s another effort underway now: The State Racial and Identity Profiling Advisory Board wants to expand the data police are required to report. If the regulations go through, officers would have to explain who they stop, the stated reason and the actual reason.
