(Sacramento, CA) — The pandemic accelerated a decline in births in the Sacramento region. New state figures show the downward trend continues, dropping about four-percent last year, according to the Department of Public Health. That’s about a thousand fewer babies in 2022.

Falling birth rates can lead to school closures and, in the long-term, labor shortages. However, experts say technology and public policy changes can mitigate effects of the trend.
