(Yuba-Sutter, CA) – CHP reports a fatal collision early yesterday afternoon on HWY 20 near the Yuba / Nevada County line.

An 82-year-old Smartsville man, whose name has not been released, was driving westbound at 1:25 yesterday afternoon, near Penn Valley Drive, and rear-ended a vehicle driven by a 17-year-old Dobbins girl. According to The Appeal-Democrat, the girl had come to a “near stop for an animal in the roadway.” The Smartsville man reportedly began to brake, but collided into the back of the girl’s pickup truck, sustaining major injuries. He died a half-hour later at the hospital.

Robert Summa writes, “it was reported that he was not wearing a seat-belt.” Neither drugs nor alcohol are considered factors and there is no mention of whether or not the 17-year-old sustained any injuries.
