(Sierra County, CA) — California has recorded its first deadly black bear attack on a human, occurring in Sierra County. In November 2023, deputies conducting a welfare check found 71-year-old Patrice Miller dead in her Downieville home, with evidence of bear intrusion and scavenging.
The bear continued returning to the property, prompting concern among locals.
After delays in securing a depredation permit, the bear was trapped and euthanized, confirming it as the one responsible for the attack.
