(Sacramento, CA) — A push to ban tackle football for kids under 12 is a step closer. The bill passed its first hurdle yesterday in California’s State Assembly and a floor vote is expected next week.

Assemblyman Kevin McCarty is behind the effort. He highlighted scientific links between tackle football and the risk of brain injury, saying kids only have one life and can wait to play.

The bill would still need to clear the Senate before reaching the governor.
