(Tehama County, CA) – A bay area man has died at Enloe Medical Center after getting in a shoot-out with a CHP officer in Tehama County.
A press release from the Tehama County Sheriff’s office says the CHP officer from the Red Bluff office responded to a report of a disabled motorist on I-5, just north of Flores Avenue at around 11:30 Sunday morning. As he approached the driver, 39-year-old Joseph Michael Pate of Pittsburgh, the officer was shot with a rifle. He then returned fire. However, Pate was able to steal the officer’s patrol car. As he sped south on I-5, he collided with a big-rig, causing the vehicle to overturn, crashing into a field where the CHP car caught fire.
The officer, though seriously injured according to the release, is expected to survive. The big-rig driver sustained minor injuries.
