(Placer County, CA) — I-80 in the Sierra Nevada is back open in both directions after an electric semi-truck caught fire, causing a major hazmat situation. The Tesla big rig fire, first reported at three o’clock Monday morning, prompted the closure of both sides of the interstate near Emigrant Gap.

The hazmat situation was caused by toxic fumes rising from the big rig’s batteries, which burned for hours. As a safety precaution, non-emergency personnel were asked to stay at least a half-mile away from the scene.

The fire started after the big rig went off the roadway and crashed into some trees. No one was injured.
