(Yuba-Sutter, CA) — The U.S. Board on Geographic Names is currently seeking feedback on a possible name change of the Sutter Buttes after receiving a formal request to change the name to the Sacred Buttes.

According to The Appeal Democrat, Rachel Rein, who serves as a director of the Sutter Buttes Regional Land Trust board, submitted the proposal to the federal body. Rein, in her proposal, cites the need for a name change based on the “extraordinarily cruel and inhumane treatment on Native Americans” that John Sutter engaged in while living in the area. Officials say the process is just beginning and may take several years to complete.

  1. I for one am sick of the history changers. Rachel Rein for example is judging the past from her supposed higher knowledge base than those who actually lived history in the making. Life at the time of John Sutter required the hardiest of souls. I doubt that Ms. Rein would survive on her own in the 1830s. Life was tough. Do not judge from afar.
