(NorCal, CA) — Caltrans is set to resume clearing a major rockslide on Highway 70 after its geo-technology team determined that Thursday evening’s earthquake did not contribute to more rockslides.
Multiple rockslides since Feb. 20 dropped an estimated 1,500 yards of rock material onto the highway, closing passage to traffic from Jarbo Gap to Greenville Wye. A 4.4-magnitude earthquake recorded Thursday about three miles from Belden prompted a Caltrans team to meet at the rockslide area, where they determined Friday noon that no additional rocks had fallen.
Debris removal is set to begin today with an estimated completion time of about four weeks, at which point one-way traffic will open to drivers around the construction area.
There is no estimate yet on when the road will be completely cleared.
