(Sacramento, CA) — The Sacramento City Council has approved a resolution declaring Sacramento a sanctuary city for transgender people.
The resolution, introduced by Councilmember Katie Valenzuela, was approved unanimously on Tuesday. It says the city will uphold the rights of transgender people, adding that no city resources will be used to detain transgender minors or adults who are seeking gender-affirming care.
Twenty-three states currently restrict or ban such care. The resolution also says Sacramento will not cooperate with jurisdictions trying to enforce laws that criminalize gender-affirming care. Sacramento is believed to be the first city in California to designate itself as a sanctuary city for transgender people.
