(Sacramento, CA) — Monday was the first Juneteenth in California since Governor Gavin Newsom proclaimed it as a statewide day of observance. But, it’s not an automatic paid holiday like Memorial Day or the Fourth of July.
If state workers want the day off, they have to ask for a personal day instead.
Twenty-eight other states and the District of Columbia recognize it as an automatic paid holiday for government workers. Juneteenth, which celebrates the end of slavery in the United States, became a federal holiday in 2021.
