(Colfax, CA) — The Placer County Sheriff’s Office is urging people to avoid swimming in the North Fork American River after two men were swept away in recent weeks.

A man from the Bay Area was swept away in the Colfax area on Sunday afternoon and still hasn’t been found. Another man from the Sacramento area was swept away by the American River confluence in Auburn on April 29th.

Authorities say the melting Sierra snowpack is making for dangerous and cold currents. The river is expected to be colder, stronger, and deeper than usual later into the year than usual. These conditions will likely continue through July.
