(Yuba-Sutter, CA) – At a parole hearing Tuesday, the Yuba County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer reports that the man who killed Deputy Brian Meilbeck has been denied parole.

Deputy Meilbeck had only been on the job for two months, 25 years ago, when Phillip Peterson – who had already shot his brother in the leg – fired on responding deputies, killing Deputy Meilbeck, leaving behind a wife and young son.

Peterson was convicted of murder, but due to changes in state law, specifically the so called elderly parole law, Peterson is now eligible for parole. Tuesday, the parole board denied him however, because “he has continued to engage in violence and misconduct while incarcerated” and “he doesn’t have a firm grasp of his issues with substance abuse.” It was ultimately concluded Peterson “believes the rules don’t apply to him.”
