(Yuba-Sutter, CA) – In Yuba County Court, 22-year-old Kaitlyn Vansant was sentenced yesterday to the upper term of 10 years in prison for gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, in the death of 37-year-old James Wesley Manes. The sentencing came exactly a year to the day after that fatal accident.
It was around 9:30 on the evening of March 27th last year, Manes was riding his bicycle along George Avenue in Olivehurst and Vansant drove into him from behind. She stopped, rendered aid and called 911. A release notes that it is a two lane rural road without markings, sidewalks or shoulders and that Vansant “recognized Manes as a neighbor and was distraught.”
She had a blood alcohol level twice the legal limit and had a prior DUI conviction.
