(Yuba-Sutter, CA) – In Yuba County Court, 46-year-old Anthony Smith of Marysville has been sentenced to 14 years in prison, for gross vehicular manslaughter in a collision that resulted in the death of an unborn child and serious injuries to the child’s mother, Robbi Megazzi.
The Yuba County DA says in a press release Smith was initially charged with 2nd degree murder, but was offered a plea deal for the reduced manslaughter charge, as the DA was not confident they had enough admissible evidence to secure a murder conviction.
It was around 5:00 in the morning, just over 2 years ago, that Smith crossed over the center-line on Hammonton-Smartsville Road and collided head-on with Megazzi’s vehicle. A witness described Smith weaving over the line moments prior to the collision and CHP found several syringes loaded with meth in his clothing and track marks on his arms indicating intravenous drug use. As well, the Department of Justice determined “that Smith’s blood had relatively low levels of the methamphetamine metabolite, amphetamine, in his system.”
