Yuba City Man Fatally Shot in Louisiana Road Rage Incident

(Greenwood, LA) – A Yuba City man was shot and killed last Tuesday in what is being investigated as a road rage incident along I-20 in Greenwood, Louisiana.

According to KTAL TV in Shreveport, 36-year-old Gurpreet Singh Judge got out of his vehicle, as did the shooter, whose identity is not provided, during an argument. Witnesses report shots were fired, and that Judge “tried to escape toward the interstate.” However, the shooter chased after the Yuba City man, fatally shooting him “at exit 3 on I-20 near the Texas border.”

The TV station adds that Judge’s death “marks the 26th homicide in Caddo Parish in 2024.”

Two Saturday Night Shootings in Sutter County

(Yuba-Sutter, CA) – The Sutter County Undersheriff reports two shootings Saturday night.

The first at 9:28 when deputies responded to shots fired in the 1600 block of Edwards Lane in Yuba City. An investigation resulted in the arrest of 33-year-old Michael Anthony Garcia-Samano. A press release says he “admitted to shooting in the air for an unknown reason.”

Then, around two hours later just before midnight, deputies responded to reports of shots fired in Sutter in the 10,000 block of Schroeder Road, 19-year-old Brian Shoquist was arrested and told officers he was shooting at what he thought was a person he had “an altercation” with earlier Saturday night at the Marysville Raceway. Shoquist reported he thought that person followed him to Sutter.

No one was hit, but Shoquist’s charges include attempted homicide, with bail set at $500,000.

Olivehurst Man Killed in HWY 70 Collision

(Yuba-Sutter, CA) – CHP Yuba-Sutter reports a fatal solo vehicle collision just before midnight, Sunday night on HWY 70 just north of the Feather River Boulevard south exit. According to the collision report, a 44-year-old Olivehurst man driving a 1993 Chevrolet was headed south on 70 and witnesses told officers he drifted off the roadway to the right, traveled through a barbed-wire fence and into a canal. He was not wearing a seatbelt.

The Appeal-Democrat, citing the Yuba County Sheriff’s Department, identifies the driver as Keith Barngrover.

YCUSD Details Free Meals & Groceries Benefits

(YCUSD Nutrition Services release) — Beginning this summer, the state of California will provide grocery benefits to help families with eligible school-age children buy groceries during the summer.

Eligible children will receive a card with $120 for use over the summer period, which is June 1st through August 31st. Funds are subject to expungement four months (122 days) after benefits are made available. Funds will be mailed to the mailing address in the California Pupil Achievement Data System (CALPADS), or the Statewide Automated Welfare System (SAWS) for children that are identified eligible through enrollment in CalFresh, CalWORKs, or Medi-Cal.

The tentative benefit issuance timeline is as follows:

June 3–30, 2024, for children identified eligible on or before March 31, 2024.

August 1, 2024, September 1, 2024, or October 15, 2024, for children determined newly eligible during the Summer period ending August 31, 2024.

Pro-Palestinian Protesters Set Up Encampment at Sacramento State

(Sacramento, CA) — Pro-Palestinian protesters have set up an encampment on the campus of Sacramento State University. Tents were first spotted Monday morning, in the library quad area. There were at least a dozen demonstrators in the encampment at the time.

The university acknowledged the protest on Monday afternoon, but says the campus remains open. A group called Students for Justice in Palestine is urging Sacramento State to divest from Israel following the events of the ongoing war in Gaza.

Kelly Ridge Murder Suspect Arrested

(Butte County, CA) – The Butte County Sheriff’s office reports the Kelly Ridge murder suspect has been caught. 54-year-old Joe Perkins of Oroville was tracked by BCSO detectives to Stockton where he was taken into custody at a gas station Friday evening.

Additionally, a search warrant was served at a Stockton residence where detectives learned Perkins had been staying, since shortly after a shooting death in the 500 block of Lodgeview Drive, late Saturday night the 20th, where additional evidence was gathered.

Overnight Roadwork on HWY 70 in North in Marysville Begins this Week

(Yuba-Sutter, CA) – Overnight roadwork on HWY 70 in north Marysville begins this week. Specifically, tomorrow night at 8:00 until 5:00 Wednesday morning and again Wednesday night at 8:00 until 5:00 Thursday morning. The work will take place between 18th and 24th Streets, as part of the Binney Junction Roadway Rehab & Complete Streets project.

Expect one-way traffic controls and delays as crews will be moving large equipment into place for the ongoing drainage improvement project, which includes rebuilding two pump plants.

Roseville Man Killed in South Sutter County Head-on

(Yuba-Sutter, CA) – CHP Yuba-Sutter reports a fatal collision last Thursday afternoon at around 3:00, in South Sutter County.

A 24-year-old Roseville man was driving east on Riego Road, just east of Pacific Avenue in a Toyota Corolla, while 55-year-old Manuel Lopez of Sacramento, in a Chevy 3500 towing a Bobcat on a trailer, was traveling west. For unknown reasons, the Roseville man crossed directly into Lopez’s pickup, sustaining fatal injuries, while Lopez sustained major injuries.

Alcohol or drugs are not suspected factors.

Sacramento Ranks Among Top 10 Most Polluted Cities in the U.S.

(Sacramento, CA) — According to the American Lung Association, Sacramento is one of the top 10 most polluted cities in the United States concerning ozone and particle pollution. The 2024 State of the Air report assesses air quality nationwide, grading cities and counties based on pollution levels.

The Los Angeles-Long Beach metro area topped the list for high ozone days, while Bakersfield led in year-round and short-term particle pollution.
