TRANSGENDER INMATES TO BE HOUSED BY GENDER IDENTITY

Transgender inmates in California will now be housed based on their gender identity.  Governor Gavin Newsom signed a law over the weekend that requires officers to ask inmates privately during the intake process if they identify as transgender, nonbinary or intersex.  They can then request to be placed in a facility that houses either men or women.  Under the law, officers must also address transgender inmates based on their preferred pronouns and requires officers to search inmates based on the search policy of their gender identity.
