Rice Planting Projections Alarmingly Low

(Nor Cal, CA) – Local and regional rice acreage estimates are alarmingly low due to historically low water allocations.

The rice farming systems advisor and director at the University of California Butte County Cooperative Extension tells the Chico Enterprise-Record it’ll be not too bad in Butte County at 60-80% of normal – But that in Colusa & Glenn Counties, estimates of acreage will be “only about 10% of normal.”

Those with irrigation rights to the Feather River water are not in as bad shape however, as those with Sacramento river contracts. The Feather river is fed by Lake Oroville and those farmers will get 50% of their water allocation, but Sacramento River farmers, fed by Lake Shasta, are only getting 2%.
