An almost month long joint investigation by the Colusa County and Yuba/Sutter Task Force’s has resulted in the arrest of 31-year-old Ray Zapien of Yuba City on suspicion of causing a multiple vehicle, serious injury hit & run accident May 31st on Highway 45.
A press release from Williams CHP reports Zapien was driving north with his girlfriend and her 15-year-old son, when he swerved off the road and hit an ATV, ejecting Destiny Sorrels, seriously injuring her. A passing motorist attempted to block Zapien’s vehicle from fleeing the scene. Zapien crashed into the pick-up, disabling his own vehicle. He then ran away with his girlfriend and her son, who was injured. Investigators believe Zapien intentionally crashed into both the ATV and the witness’s pick-up in an attempt to kill himself and his passengers.
He’s charged with attempted murder with bail set at half-a-million dollars.
